About Gwyn James & Son
A long-established, family-run builders merchant in Newcastle Emlyn supplying essential materials for building and construction across West Wales.
Our History
Gwyn James & Son was established in 1958 by Gwyn James as a haulage business in Newcastle Emlyn. Gwyn purchased the field where the current site now stands and obtained planning permission to create an entrance onto the main road. Prior to that, the only access to the site was through Tivy Terrace along the River Teifi.
In the early years, materials such as sand and cement were supplied from the yard, with local farmers and builders collecting what they needed. Over time, the builders merchant side of the business developed and expanded into the range of building supplies we stock today.
Developing the Builders Merchant
In 1977, the business owner left to work for Lloyds Bank for ten years before returning to run the business again. On returning, the focus shifted away from haulage and towards building up the merchant side, supplying construction materials to trade and local customers.
