A long-established family builders merchant in Newcastle Emlyn supplying building materials for trade and the public across West Wales.
Our History
Gwyn James & Son was established in 1958 by Gwyn James as a haulage business in Newcastle Emlyn. Gwyn purchased the field where the current builders merchant yard now stands and obtained planning permission to create an entrance onto the main road.
Before this entrance existed, access to the site was through Tivy Terrace along the River Teifi.
In the early years the yard supplied materials such as sand and cement, with local farmers and builders collecting what they needed. Over time the builders merchant side of the business expanded into the range of construction materials supplied today.
Developing the Builders Merchant
In 1977 the business owner left to work for Lloyds Bank for ten years before returning to run the family business once again.
On returning, the focus moved away from haulage and towards developing the builders merchant side of the company, supplying building materials to tradespeople, builders and local customers.
Since then the yard has become a trusted local supplier of essential construction materials including timber, drainage supplies, building blocks and bagged materials.

For more than sixty years Gwyn James & Son has supplied building materials to tradespeople, builders and homeowners across West Wales.
Our reputation has been built on reliability, practical knowledge and strong relationships with local customers. Many builders have worked with us for generations, relying on our yard for essential materials and dependable service.
Today we continue that tradition from our Newcastle Emlyn yard, providing core building materials with friendly service and local expertise.
